# What does the morning look like in an AI-native business?

It should begin with prepared work, visible exceptions, and decisions assigned to people. The owner opens a view that shows what ran, what needs review, and what stopped. Each item leads to its sources, output, and receipt.

That is a design goal, not a promise that work completes while nobody is watching. A useful morning can include a blocked job. The important distinction is whether the team can see the block and knows who handles it.

The following morning is illustrative. A small product business has an approved function that prepares inquiry replies and a separate function that prepares an order exceptions report. Both stage drafts. People retain control of sending messages and changing orders.

## Start with whether the jobs inspected their inputs

The owner's first view shows the last attempted run for each function. It names the reporting window and the source state. A reply job that inspected the approved inquiry queue is different from one that could not open it.

Require the view to distinguish complete, no work, blocked, and failed. No work means the queue was checked and contained no eligible items. Blocked means a required source or decision was missing. Failed means the job encountered an error it could not resolve.

Keep the most recent successful result visible, but label it with its date. Do not let yesterday's accepted report appear to be today's output. Put the latest failed or blocked attempt beside it.

Use the guide to [empty versus broken job receipts](/articles/ai-agent-no-work-receipt) to define these states. Build the morning review from evidence of inspection rather than an activity light that only shows a schedule exists.

## Open the exceptions before the ordinary drafts

In the illustrative morning, the order report is blocked because the current export is missing. The view identifies the missing file and the person responsible for supplying it. It does not invent an order position from the prior report.

The owner assigns the source problem to the operations manager. If a manual report is needed, the manager uses the accepted fallback process. The AI function remains blocked until its input requirement is met.

Keep a short explanation beside each exception. State what stopped, what the function already inspected, and what action would allow a safe retry. Link to the receipt for detail.

Do not let the model set a new business priority because an exception sounds urgent. Define priority rules with the responsible people. The morning view should present the evidence needed for their decision, including uncertainty and missing material.

## Review each prepared item against its source

The inquiry function has prepared replies from the approved queue. Each draft shows the source inquiry, the business rule used, and any question the function could not answer.

The reviewer checks the customer's request, proposed wording, recipient, and sending account. If the source does not establish a delivery commitment, the draft should leave that commitment unresolved for a person. It should not borrow a promise from a similar past case.

Group items only when the review still exposes the exact content and destinations. A group label such as routine replies should not hide a materially different promise in one draft. Give the reviewer a way to reject or return an individual item.

This is the human check at the end of the 10/80/10 method. The split assigns responsibility for direction, preparation, and review. It does not establish how much time this morning will take.

## Keep approval separate from a completed preparation job

A function can finish preparing a draft while the business action remains pending. Show those two states separately. Prepared means the artifact passed its preparation checks. Sent means the approved transmission was confirmed.

After a person approves the exact reply, the sending capability must check that the content, recipient, account, and approval still match. If one changes, the revised action returns to the applicable approval process.

If the send fails, keep the failure visible. Do not mark the inquiry handled because the draft was approved. Before a retry, check whether the original action succeeded so the team does not send a duplicate.

For the full action rule, read [who approves what an AI agent sends](/articles/who-approves-what-an-ai-agent-sends). The morning view should make those rules usable by the person doing the review.

## Make corrections part of the next run's record

Suppose the reviewer finds an outdated fulfillment rule in a draft. Preserve the affected result and identify the source that supplied the rule. Assign the source correction to someone authorized to change it.

Keep the corrected draft separate from the accepted business rule. Editing one reply does not always mean the policy should change for every future customer. The reviewer should state whether the change is case-specific or applies to later runs.

After an authorized rule update, test the affected example again. Add it to the acceptance set if it represents a recurring case. Keep the old result available for diagnosis under the business's retention rules.

The [correction log template](/articles/ai-correction-log-template) shows how to retain this decision. In the morning view, show a correction as pending until its owner has accepted and tested the change.

## Check spend before requesting more preparation

Show the cost of the latest run and the function's accumulated spending against its defined limit. Name the alert recipient. Label an estimate as an estimate when final usage data is still unavailable.

Decide in advance how a reached limit affects work. The function might stop new preparation and present its manual fallback. An owner can review the limit through the approved process. The function should not raise it to keep the queue moving.

Record the model used in the receipt. If a replacement model is proposed, test it against the accepted examples before changing routine work. A morning cost alert is a reason to inspect the function, not evidence that an untested alternative meets its requirements.

Keep spend alongside quality. A low-cost run that prepared unusable replies still needs to appear as rejected work in the review record.

## Give each exception a person and a next step

By the end of the illustrative review, ordinary replies have a documented disposition. The missing order export has an owner. The outdated rule has a correction task. A failed action has a retry decision rather than an unexplained pending label.

Use one responsible person per exception. If that person is unavailable, define the fallback role before the next run. Do not make the owner the automatic destination for every issue.

NIST's AI RMF Core recommends monitoring system behavior in production and retaining processes for feedback. Apply that principle through a review that records what the team found and changed. [NIST AI RMF Core, Measure 2.4 and 3.3](https://airc.nist.gov/airmf-resources/airmf/5-sec-core/), checked 2026.10.26.

Review recurring exceptions separately from the morning queue. If the same source is missing repeatedly, change the source process or the function's scope. Avoid treating every repeated failure as a fresh one-off task.

## Build this morning around one function first

Choose a recurring task with sources the team can identify and a result someone can verify. Study the task, sort its steps, and write the acceptance checks before arranging a dashboard around it.

Practice a normal run, a missing-source run, and a no-work run. Have the intended reviewer explain each result from the output and receipt. Complete the runbook when that person can direct, check, and correct the function without the builder.

The [AI systems method](/ai-systems) starts with this bounded function and team handoff. Your first morning view should show the work that exists and the decisions people still own. Add more functions after the review process works for the first.

[Send your brief](/work#send-your-brief) with the morning task, its inputs, and the decisions your team should see ready for review.
