# Give your AI your catalog and customer file so product copy fits your store.

You are adding 30 products this month. Each one needs a description, bullet points, a meta description, and a launch email.

You tried AI. You pasted the spec sheet and asked for a description. It returned: "High-quality product made with premium materials. Perfect for your everyday needs. Order now and experience the difference."

That copy fits every store on the internet, so it fits none. You spend 15 minutes per product rewriting it: your voice, the benefits your customers care about, the objections that show up in your reviews. Thirty products at 15 minutes each is 7.5 hours of repair work.

This page shows how to give the assistant a store file so the first draft starts from your brand, your customer, and your catalog.

## Why generic AI writes generic product copy

You paste a spec sheet and ask for a description. The assistant returns:

- a feature list that reads like a manufacturer datasheet;
- benefits so broad they fit anything ("improve your lifestyle");
- no link to your customer or their problems;
- a tone that misses your brand: too formal, too casual, or too salesy;
- no idea where the product sits in your catalog.

The next product gets the same treatment. The assistant does not remember that:

- your voice is conversational, not corporate;
- you sell to busy parents, not "professionals seeking quality";
- your customers care about durability and easy cleaning, not "premium materials";
- you carry three similar products and must tell them apart;
- your best descriptions lead with the outcome, not the feature;
- every clothing description includes a sizing note because returns cost you money.

You cannot grow the catalog if you rewrite every description by hand.

## What the assistant needs for each job

For product descriptions, it needs your voice and how it shifts by category. It needs your customer's problems and buying triggers, and the specific benefits that matter. It also needs how the product compares with others in the catalog, the common objections, and your description structure.

For launch emails, it needs your email voice, your subject line style, which products to cross-sell, and the seasonal calendar. It also needs how you talk about new arrivals, restocks, and limited editions.

For customer replies, it needs your return policy and how you explain it, standard shipping answers, and care and warranty terms. It also needs your complaint style: apology first or fix first.

That is not a prompt. It is a record.

## Build the store file

Claude Code reads a file named `CLAUDE.md` at the start of each session. Put the store's core there and link the detail files. You do not paste it, because Claude Code loads it on its own.

The file records:

- brand voice: tone, word choices, sentence structure, banned phrases;
- target customer: demographics, problems, buying motivations, objections;
- catalog: categories, your price bands, key differences, cross-sell pairs;
- description rules: format, length, benefit order, call to action style;
- supplier notes: lead times, minimum order quantities, quality issues, backups;
- seasonal plan: peak months, promotion calendar, inventory planning.

```text
## Description rules
Length: 150-200 words. Never longer.
Order: outcome first ("no more spills"), then feature ("spill-proof design").
Short sentences. One benefit per line. White space between lines.
Clothing: always include a sizing note and link the size chart.
Similar products: SKU 2847 and SKU 3482 differ in pocket depth; say so.
## Facts
Use only facts from the spec sheet in specs/<SKU>.md.
Safety and material claims ("BPA-free," "food-grade") need a supplier document in specs/.
If a claim has no document, leave it out and flag it.
```

The facts rule matters. A description that invents a safety claim creates a liability, not a sale.

## A worked run: 30 new products

Before the store file: you import 30 products from the supplier. You paste the first spec sheet and ask for a description. The assistant returns: "This premium product is crafted from high-quality materials and designed to meet your needs. Its durable construction ensures long-lasting performance." You rewrite it, fix the tone, add benefits, and point to the size chart. Fifteen minutes. Thirty times.

After the store file: you save each spec sheet as `specs/<SKU>.md`, start Claude Code, and prompt: "Write the description for SKU 3482." The assistant reads the store file and the spec sheet and writes:

> Your toddler spills. A lot.
>
> This bib catches it all. Extra-wide pocket. Stays put through the meal. Wipes clean in seconds.
>
> No more outfit changes mid-lunch.
>
> Food-grade silicone. BPA-free. Dishwasher safe.
>
> Fits 6 months to 3 years. Adjustable neck; check the size chart below.

You check the claims against the spec sheet and the supplier documents, approve the copy, and move to the next SKU. Time the second batch against the first so you know what the file saves in your store.

## Campaigns and category pages from the same record

Keep a campaign calendar alongside the catalog. This synthetic store runs back-to-school copy from late July through early September. Black Friday uses four emails: teaser, launch, reminder, and last chance. Record the approved dates, offer rules, and SKU list before drafting. Ask for the sequence in your email voice, then check that each message uses the current offer.

For a category page, read `seo/category-terms.md`, the current product range, and `positioning.md`. Draft a description for commuter backpacks around laptop fit, weight, and documented weather resistance. For travelers, use verified carry-on dimensions and internal organization. Review each term and claim against the catalog; do not turn a category benefit into a promise for every SKU.

Stock and prices belong in the store platform. Put a freshness rule in the context file: check a dated platform export before including a product in a promotion. Recheck the live platform before publication. If the export lacks a current price or stock status, stop and ask for a new one. Customer orders and payment details stay in the platform and help desk.

## What changes when the assistant knows the catalog

Descriptions sound like your brand instead of "premium quality" filler.

Output stays consistent as the catalog grows, whether you add 50 products this month or 100 next month.

Cross-selling improves. When the assistant knows the catalog, it suggests pairings in descriptions and emails.

Customer replies speed up. Return questions, shipping questions, and care questions start from your policies.

Email campaigns stay on brand. New arrival announcements, restock alerts, and seasonal promotions use your voice.

For voice files that must not freeze an outdated claim, see [AI brand memory for content creation](/articles/ai-brand-memory-content-creation). A single job, such as "write descriptions for a new product batch," works best with a written list of its sources. The [AI context manifest template](/articles/ai-context-manifest-template) shows the format.

## Setup in one afternoon

The store file needs no model training and no code. You write down what you already know:

1. Brand voice and tone rules.
2. Target customer profile and problems.
3. Catalog structure and product relationships.
4. Description format and content priorities.
5. Common objections and your answers.
6. Supplier details and inventory plan.

Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or an API account; the free plan does not include it ([Claude Code: Advanced setup](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/setup), checked 2026.09.25). Obsidian is optional and free to download. After setup, each description, campaign, and reply starts from the record.

## Test the file

Run these checks on five new SKUs, starting in a fresh store-folder session.

1. Pass: every factual claim in each description appears in the spec sheet or a supplier document. Fail: find the rule the assistant ignored and tighten it.
2. Pass: the two similar SKUs get descriptions that name their difference. Fail: add the difference to the catalog file.
3. Pass: every clothing description has the sizing note. Fail: move the rule higher in `CLAUDE.md`.
4. Change one voice rule, close the session, and start another. Pass: the new draft follows the amended rule. Fail: it repeats the retired wording.
5. Give the session an old price export or a SKU without stock status. Pass: it flags the stale or missing source and refuses a promotion-ready claim. Fail: it fills the gap from memory.

When you correct the same thing twice, write it into the file. [How corrections become part of the system](/articles/corrections-become-system-memory) explains why.

## Handle a customer reply from the same file

Support answers use the policy section of the store file. A customer writes: "The bib arrived with a small tear at the seam. Can I get a replacement?"

You prompt: "Draft a reply to a damaged-item message for SKU 3482." The assistant reads the return policy, the complaint style rule (apology first, then the fix), and the product's warranty line. Its draft offers the replacement your policy allows. If your policy requires a photo, the draft asks for one. You check the order in your store system, add the order number, and send.

The draft never contains the customer's name or address, because those live in the store system, not in the folder.

## Who this fits

The pattern fits a Shopify owner who adds products each month and an Amazon seller who writes listings for many ASINs. It also fits an Etsy seller who needs distinct copy for handmade variations. A store that sells the same products as its competitors must stand apart on its copy. Each marketplace has its own listing rules; keep them in a platform file per channel.

## Limits

The assistant drafts. You publish. It does not change live listings, prices, or inventory. Claude Code sends the content it reads to the model provider over the network ([Claude Code: Data usage](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/data-usage)). Keep customer names, addresses, and order data out of the folder. A copywriter who writes for several store clients can use the [copywriter version of this setup](/articles/ai-for-copywriters).
