# Write your brand voice into files so AI drafts sound like you on every platform.

You need this week's LinkedIn posts. You ask AI to write about your latest product feature.

It returns corporate thought leadership that sounds like everyone else: "Excited to announce our new feature that will transform how teams collaborate!"

Wrong voice, wrong tone, wrong format. Your brand is casual and direct, with short sentences. You avoid exclamation marks and buzzwords. Your LinkedIn posts open with a hook, not an announcement.

You paste your voice guide, give examples of good posts, and name your content pillars. The second attempt is closer. Tomorrow, on another platform, the assistant has forgotten your voice and you start over.

A content creator does not need another AI writing tool. You need the assistant to sound like you, every session.

## Why a generic assistant writes generic posts

ChatGPT can write. It cannot write in your voice, about your topics, for your audience, unless it has a record of them.

You manage six things that the assistant does not see:

- brand voice: sentence length, vocabulary, tone, and what to avoid;
- content pillars: the three to five topics you post about consistently;
- audience: who they are, what they care about, and the words they use;
- platform formats: LinkedIn, Instagram, X, and your newsletter each work differently;
- publishing schedule: what goes out when, and which days perform;
- performance history: which hooks work, which formats get engagement, which topics land.

Without those, the assistant writes in a default internet voice, picks topics at random, and ignores platform format. It can write. It does not know what your audience wants to read.

## What each file holds

Claude Code reads a file named `CLAUDE.md` at the start of each session. Point it to a folder of context files, such as an Obsidian vault. Tell it to read the voice and platform files before any draft.

`brand-voice.md` holds the voice itself, not "casual and conversational." It records sentence rhythm, words you use, words you avoid, and examples of on-brand and off-brand writing. It also records your hard rules: no corporate speak, no exclamation marks, no emoji overuse. It also records how the voice shifts by platform: direct on LinkedIn, warm on Instagram, teaching in the newsletter.

`content-pillars.md` lists your three to five pillars, how each connects to your offer or expertise, the angles inside each pillar, and what counts as off-pillar.

`audience-profile.md` describes real people, not demographics: their problems, their language, what resonates, and what does not.

`platform-rules.md` holds your own format rules. For example:

```text
## LinkedIn
Max 150 words. Hook in the first line. No more than two hashtags.
## Instagram
Longer caption. Emojis allowed, sparingly. CTA goes in stories, not in the post.
## Newsletter
Two or three sentences of intro before the first subheading.
## All platforms
Aspect ratios and image style: see visual-rules.md
```

These are your rules, based on what works for your audience. Platform limits change; check each platform's current limits when you set the file up and date the check.

`performance-data.md` records what worked: the post that got ten times your normal engagement and the hook format that keeps performing. It also records the question your audience keeps asking and the format that flops. Each entry carries a date and the post it came from:

```text
## 2026-08-12 | LinkedIn | pillar: productivity tools
Hook: "I deleted 40 browser tabs and lost nothing."
Result: about 10x my median impressions for the month
Why I think it worked: concrete number, personal admission, no pitch
Reuse: confession-style hook; do not reuse the tab number
```

A sixth file, `schedule.md`, holds the publishing calendar: which pillar runs on which day, and which days perform best for each platform. When you ask, "What should I post on Thursday?", the assistant reads the schedule and the pillars before it proposes a topic.

## Before and after

Before: "Draft a LinkedIn post about our new feature." The assistant writes announcement copy with exclamation marks and buzzwords. You paste your voice rules, give examples, explain the pillar, and specify the format. The second draft still needs 15 minutes of edits. Tomorrow, on another platform, you repeat it all.

After: the same prompt. The assistant reads `brand-voice.md`, `content-pillars.md`, and `platform-rules.md`. The first draft opens with a hook, fits your productivity tools pillar, follows your LinkedIn rules, and sounds like you. You change one sentence.

Next request: "Turn that into an Instagram caption." The assistant shifts to your Instagram voice, which is warmer and more visual. It lengthens the caption and moves the call to action to where your rules put it. You edit lightly again.

You did not paste a voice guide or an example post.

## A worked setup

A creator building a personal brand sets up five files:

1. `brand-voice.md`: sentence style, vocabulary, tone rules, examples.
2. `content-pillars.md`: her four topics and the angles within each.
3. `audience-profile.md`: who they are, their problems, their language.
4. `platform-rules.md`: format rules for LinkedIn, Instagram, and the newsletter.
5. `performance-data.md`: hooks that work, topics that land, formats that flop.

She sets them up once. When a post performs well, she adds a line to `performance-data.md` with what worked and why she thinks it worked. The next draft uses that note.

When her voice changes, for example from formal to casual, or when she adds a pillar, she updates one file. Every later draft reflects the change.

The files also become her brand guidelines. A freelancer reads them before writing. The assistant reads them before every draft. A collaborator reads them to stay on brand. The difference between these files and a one-off prompt is explained in [a brief is not a prompt](/articles/brief-vs-prompt).

## Update the files from your own results

The performance file earns its place only if you feed it. Set a weekly ten-minute routine.

1. Open your analytics for each platform and pick the best and worst post of the week.
2. Add one entry per post to `performance-data.md`: date, platform, pillar, hook, result against your median, and your reason.
3. If a hook format has worked three times, write it into `brand-voice.md` as a pattern to reuse.
4. If a topic has flopped twice, note it in `content-pillars.md` as an angle to rest.

After a month, ask the assistant which hooks and topics the file shows as reliable. Compare its answer with your own sense of what works. A gap means the entries are too thin. Add the reason field to each one.

## Keep the files honest

A voice file can freeze an old claim. A product feature changes, a statistic ages, or a promise no longer holds, and the assistant repeats it in new posts. Mark each factual claim in your files with a date and a source, and review the list each quarter. [AI brand memory for content creation](/articles/ai-brand-memory-content-creation) shows how to keep approved voice without keeping stale claims.

When you edit a draft for the same reason twice, write the fix into `brand-voice.md`. [How corrections become part of the system](/articles/corrections-become-system-memory) explains why a correction in chat does not last. Research notes behind a post belong in their own file with sources; see [AI memory for content research](/articles/ai-memory-content-research).

## Test the voice files

Run three checks after setup.

1. Ask for a LinkedIn post and an Instagram caption on the same topic. Pass: the two differ in the ways your rules describe. Fail: they read the same.
2. Ask for a post on an off-pillar topic. Pass: the assistant flags that it is off-pillar. Fail: it writes the post without comment.
3. Count banned words across five drafts. Pass: zero. Fail: add the words to the avoid list and retest.

## What stays with you

The assistant drafts. You publish. It does not post, schedule, or reply to comments on its own. Claude Code sends the content it reads to the model provider over the network. [Claude Code: Data usage](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/data-usage) Keep account passwords and unreleased partner information out of the folder.
