# AI automation offers: warning signs before you buy

Pause an AI automation purchase if the seller cannot define the function or support its claims. Ask the seller to explain ongoing costs and what your business will control. Ask for evidence tied to the work you are buying.

A warning sign is a reason to investigate or decline. It does not establish fraud. Keep the exact claim, request the supporting material, and record whether the answer resolves your concern.

Use this guide to review the offer before payment. For detailed runtime tests after a supplier has defined the function, use the [AI agent buying questionnaire](/articles/questions-before-buying-ai-agent-system).

## Guaranteed business results without relevant proof

Separate a promise to deliver a function from a prediction about your business. Preparing a draft from approved records is a defined task. A claim about future revenue needs a different kind of evidence.

The FTC's advertising FAQs say advertisers must have evidence supporting their claims before the ads run. They also address implied claims and material omissions. [FTC advertising FAQs](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/advertising-faqs-guide-small-business) (checked October 26, 2026).

For your purchasing review, write down the exact result being claimed. Ask what was measured, under which conditions, and how it relates to your proposed function. Do not supply missing assumptions on the seller's behalf. If the evidence does not support the claim you relied on, revise the purchasing decision.

## An income opportunity presented as effortless automation

Look closely when an offer combines AI with passive income or a ready-made business. Question any promise that the buyer has little work to do. Ask what your business must operate, approve, maintain, and pay for.

The FTC's AI-related business-opportunity guidance describes baseless earnings claims in a scheme it challenged. It advises buyers to compare seller statements with written disclosures. [FTC: Vetting a business or coaching opportunity](https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2023/08/vetting-business-or-coaching-opportunity-you-buy) (checked October 26, 2026).

That guidance concerns business opportunities. It does not establish that every custom software purchase has the same disclosure requirements. For an implementation purchase, request the written result, required buyer work, costs, and terms. Resolve any mismatch with the sales presentation before paying.

## A refund promise offered instead of evidence

Read any cancellation or refund policy as its own set of terms. Check its conditions, exclusions, deadlines, and the process the buyer must follow. Keep a copy with the offer.

The FTC's advertising FAQs explain that a money-back guarantee does not replace evidence supporting advertising claims. [FTC advertising FAQs](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/advertising-faqs-guide-small-business).

Ask the seller to support the promised performance independently of the refund language. Then decide whether the written payment terms are acceptable. Do not assume a refund exists when it is absent from the agreement. Do not let an unresolved performance claim become acceptable solely because the sales call describes the purchase as risk-free.

## AI is the entire explanation of the mechanism

Ask the supplier to describe the job without using the word AI. What information enters? Which rule determines the next step? What does the function produce? Who checks it? Where does it stop?

Request a safe example using the shape of your work. Ask the seller to identify the parts that use fixed rules and the parts that require model judgment. Keep the explanation understandable to your future operator.

Treat unexplained labels such as autonomous or self-improving as questions. Ask what behavior they describe and how you will test it. If the proposal depends on an undefined capability, request a narrower scope with an observable result before buying.

## The demonstration excludes ordinary exceptions

Ask what happens with a missing source, a conflicting record, an unavailable connection, or an input outside the approved scope. Choose an exception that occurs in your process.

Have the supplier state the expected behavior before running the test. For an illustrative report function, remove a required update. Observe whether the function stops or produces the agreed incomplete draft. Check the visible explanation and the next human action.

Keep the test safe and bounded. Do not grant production access to evaluate a sales claim. Record an unresolved result as unresolved. A successful ordinary demonstration does not answer a question about failure behavior. Ask for the missing evidence rather than averaging the two together.

## The price leaves the operating bill undefined

Ask which model services, hosting, connectors, storage, and support the function requires. Identify the account owner and payer for each. Request usage assumptions and mark estimates clearly.

Ask for a spend limit, an alert recipient, and the behavior at that limit. Request a run record with cost information and any reporting delay explained. Compare those answers with the headline description of the offer.

Do not assume one-time implementation means zero recurring charges. Do not assume a subscription includes every dependency. The [fixed-price versus hourly comparison](/articles/fixed-price-ai-build-vs-hourly) explains how to separate build work from operating spend. Keep every required charge visible before making the purchase decision.

## Ownership is asserted without an inventory

Ask what your business receives and what remains licensed or hosted by someone else. List the source records, operating rules, configuration, code, tests, runbook, and history relevant to your function.

For each item, request its location, administrator, export route, and agreed rights. Ask whether another provider can maintain the delivered function. Mark any restriction that would affect your future use.

Use the [ownership transfer checklist](/articles/ai-system-ownership-transfer-checklist) to plan practical checks. Keep rights and operating access as separate questions. A seller can resolve them through a clear inventory and a tested handoff. If it cannot, decide whether that dependence fits your business before paying.

## Human review has no named reviewer or stopping rule

Ask who reviews each output and how they receive it. Require a visible preview before any action that needs approval. Identify the account, destination, and specific action under review.

Ask what happens when the reviewer is unavailable or when the underlying output changes. Define which work waits and which work can continue. Keep the person responsible for the consequence involved in this decision.

Use the [approval matrix guide](/articles/ai-agent-approval-matrix) when defining these roles. Avoid buying an approval promise that your operator cannot locate in the proposed workflow. Include a safe test where approval is missing and confirm the action remains blocked under the agreed rule.

## The offer expands whenever you ask about completion

Ask for one first function with a result, exclusions, and acceptance checks. Keep later improvements in a separate list. Do not let a broader roadmap replace the answer to what this purchase delivers.

Have the supplier identify the buyer's responsibilities and the work needed before delivery starts. Ask how missing inputs and additional requests affect the price and schedule. Require changes to be written and authorized.

If the scope remains unclear after revision, defer the purchase. You can decide to buy a bounded investigation instead, provided its output and spending boundary are defined. Keep the decision tied to the next piece of work you can evaluate.

## Turn concerns into a written decision

Create a short offer review with four fields: exact claim, evidence requested, evidence received, and decision. Use resolved, unresolved, or outside this purchase. Attach the scope and terms you reviewed.

For unresolved concerns, decide whether to request another answer, remove the affected work, or decline. Avoid treating presentation quality as a substitute for the missing document or test. Keep your decision consistent with the evidence you received.

Ask the future operator to review the function and the budget owner to review its charges. Both should be able to explain the purchase in plain words. Resolve contradictions between the offer, scope, and payment terms before proceeding.

## Buy a function with a written finish line

Scale With Search studies the business, sorts recurring work, builds one function at a time, and trains the people running it. The scope states the result and acceptance checks. The method makes no promise of revenue, headcount cuts, or a set number of hours saved.

Read [AI systems for your business](/ai-systems) for the method and current terms. To put your first function into writing, [send your brief](/work#send-your-brief).
