# Choose between Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz for the SEO work you do.

You need one SEO platform, and three names come up every time: Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz. Each one claims to do everything. A review ranks one of them first, and the next review ranks a different one first. Your actual work, the five tasks you do every week, rarely appears in those rankings.

These three platforms lead the SEO tool market, but they serve different work. An agency owner needs different features than a developer. A content strategist needs different data than a technical SEO specialist. The right choice is the tool whose strengths match your workflow, budget, and role.

This comparison reflects the three products as reviewed in March 2026. Features, plan names, and prices change often. Confirm each claim on the vendor's current plan page before you buy.

## Know what each platform is built for

### Ahrefs: backlink and content data

Ahrefs built its name on a large, fresh backlink index. Its big-data page states that its crawler visits 5 million pages a minute (vendor claim, checked September 2026). The platform is strong at competitor backlink analysis, content gap research, and rank tracking, with a clean and fast interface.

Site Explorer covers competitor and backlink research. Content Explorer finds top-performing content by topic. Keywords Explorer reports search volume and difficulty.

Ahrefs focuses on SEO. It has little paid search or social media coverage, and fewer marketing workflow features than an all-in-one suite.

### Semrush: an all-in-one marketing suite

Semrush sells itself as a full digital marketing suite: SEO, paid search, content, social media, and competitive intelligence. It has the widest feature set of the three and the most complexity.

It covers paid search research and competitor ad analysis. Position Tracking gives deep competitor comparison, and Site Audit runs recurring crawls with issue tracking. It also includes a content toolkit with a writing assistant, social media tools, and local listing management.

The breadth has a cost. New users face a steep learning curve, the navigation has many layers, and some modules feel less polished than a specialist tool.

### Moz: an accessible SEO foundation

Moz focuses on easy SEO, with a simple interface, strong learning content, and a large community presence. Its data depth trails Ahrefs and Semrush.

Moz Pro combines site crawl, rank tracking, and backlink analysis in one package. Its Domain Authority and Page Authority metrics are widely recognized. The free MozBar browser extension shows metrics on the search results page.

Moz has the smallest backlink index of the three, updates data less often, and offers fewer advanced features for enterprise work.

### Relative price, September 2026

In September 2026, Moz Pro had the lowest entry price of the three. Ahrefs and Semrush entry plans both cost more. Plan tiers and discounts change often, so compare the upper tiers on each vendor's plan page.

## Compare the platforms task by task

| Task | Strongest | Runner-up | Weakest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlink analysis | Ahrefs | Semrush | Moz |
| Keyword research | Ahrefs and Semrush (tie) | | Moz |
| Rank tracking | Semrush | Ahrefs | Moz |
| Site auditing | Semrush | Ahrefs | Moz |
| Content research and gaps | Ahrefs | Semrush | Moz |
| Competitive intelligence | Semrush | Ahrefs | Moz |

### Backlink analysis

Ahrefs holds the largest and most current backlink database. For competitor link research, link prospecting, and link profile health, its data is the most complete and the freshest.

Semrush has solid backlink data from a smaller index that updates less often. It serves most needs, but it is weaker for deep link intelligence. Moz has the smallest index. It covers basic analysis but not large link building campaigns.

If backlink work is your main job, Ahrefs earns its cost. If links are secondary, Semrush or Moz can suffice.

### Keyword research

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer gives reliable search volume, difficulty scores, and strong international data, in a fast interface.

The Semrush Keyword Magic Tool draws on a very large database. Semrush reports more than 25 billion keywords (vendor claim, checked September 2026). It adds strong filters, question queries, and search feature flags. Its paid search data adds commercial intent.

Moz Keyword Explorer works, but its database is smaller and its metrics less detailed.

Content strategists gain most from the Semrush database breadth. Technical SEO specialists often prefer Ahrefs for accuracy and international coverage. All three tools estimate search volume from Google Keyword Planner and their own data. No tool gives exact volume, so treat every figure as directional. Ahrefs and Semrush give comparable estimates; Moz tends to be more conservative. [The keyword research process guide](/articles/keyword-research-process-guide) shows how to use the numbers.

### Rank tracking

Semrush Position Tracking offers deep competitor comparison, share-of-market views, and visibility across desktop, mobile, and local results. Its automated reports and history charts are strong.

Ahrefs Rank Tracker is accurate and simple, but it has less competitor benchmarking. It suits monitoring your own positions. Moz Pro rank tracking is basic. It works for small keyword sets but becomes impractical for hundreds of keywords across many clients.

Agencies that track competitors for many clients favor Semrush. A single site with a focused keyword set can use Ahrefs or Moz. [The rank tracking tools guide](/articles/rank-tracking-tools-guide) compares dedicated trackers too.

### Site auditing

Semrush Site Audit runs recurring crawls, scores issues by priority, keeps issue history, and tracks fix progress. For ongoing technical health, it was the strongest of the three in this review.

Ahrefs Site Audit is solid and supports scheduled crawls, but its issue tracking over time is less detailed. Moz Pro Site Crawl gives basic audits with simpler issue categories, which suits smaller sites.

In-house teams that manage technical health every week tend to prefer Semrush. Agencies that run periodic audits can use Ahrefs well.

### Content research and gap analysis

Ahrefs Content Explorer searches its page index by keyword. It finds top content by backlinks, estimated organic traffic, and social shares. Its Content Gap report lists keywords that competitors rank for and you do not.

Semrush Topic Research and the SEO Content Template support topic ideas, with less content discovery depth. Moz has no dedicated content research module beyond keyword suggestions.

Content marketers who build editorial calendars get the most from Ahrefs Content Explorer.

### Competitive intelligence

Semrush has the widest competitor suite: organic and paid competitors, traffic analytics, ad research, social monitoring, and market share. Ahrefs is strong on competitor links and content but thin on paid and social data. Moz gives basic competitor metrics through Link Explorer.

Marketing managers who own multi-channel competitor analysis gain most from Semrush.

## Match the platform to your role

| Role | First choice | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Agency owner | Semrush | Ahrefs, for SEO-only agencies focused on content and links |
| In-house SEO specialist | Ahrefs or Semrush, by context | Moz, for small budgets in low-competition markets |
| Content strategist | Ahrefs | Semrush, if you want the writing assistant |
| Technical SEO specialist or developer | Screaming Frog plus Ahrefs or Semrush | Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, and Moz entry plan |
| Freelance consultant | Ahrefs entry or mid plan | Semrush, if you sell SEO and paid search together |
| Enterprise SEO team | Semrush business or custom plan plus specialist tools | |
| Student or beginner | Moz entry plan, or free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Semrush free account with strict limits |

### Agency owners

Agency work needs breadth: SEO for some clients, paid search for others, content for others. Semrush lets you serve all of them from one subscription, which improves team efficiency and cuts tool spend. Its white-label reports, multi-user access, and client portal access support agency operations. Choose Ahrefs instead if your agency does only SEO with a focus on content and links. Its cleaner interface and stronger link data outweigh the missing marketing breadth.

### In-house SEO specialists

Choose Ahrefs when content strategy and link building are your main duties. It also fits when you value speed over breadth and other teams own paid search and social tools. Choose Semrush when you cover several marketing channels, report on competitor paid search, manage content workflow, or need recurring audits.

Moz fits smaller organizations with limited budgets in less competitive markets. Its entry plan covers the basics for low to moderate competition.

### Content strategists

Content work means finding strong content, spotting gaps, and ranking topics by organic opportunity. Ahrefs Content Explorer and Keywords Explorer fit that work. You can filter by topic, see what performs, and see why through link profiles and traffic estimates. Semrush is the alternative when you want live optimization advice inside the writing assistant, which Ahrefs does not match.

### Technical SEO specialists and developers

Technical work needs deep crawl data, structured data checks, JavaScript rendering analysis, and site architecture views. Screaming Frog remains the reference crawler for this work, and none of the three platforms matches its depth. [Screaming Frog for non-developers](/articles/screaming-frog-non-developers) covers the crawler.

Add Ahrefs for a simpler stack and stronger link data. Add Semrush for recurring audit monitoring and links to wider marketing analytics. On a tight budget, combine Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, and the Moz entry plan. That set covers technical audits, rank tracking, and link monitoring for one Moz subscription plus Screaming Frog's annual license.

### Freelance consultants

Freelancers usually work alone or with a small team for 5 to 15 clients across industries. Ahrefs gives the best value for this work. The clean interface saves time. The link and content data raise deliverable quality. The shorter learning curve helps you onboard an occasional assistant. Keyword research and rank tracking cover core client needs.

Choose Semrush if you sell SEO and paid search together, because one platform then serves both. [The freelance SEO tools stack](/articles/freelance-seo-tools-stack) covers the rest of the kit.

### Enterprise SEO teams

Enterprise SEO needs scale: thousands of tracked keywords, several brands or sites, cross-functional teams, and marketing automation links. Semrush enterprise plans give API access for custom reports, multi-user collaboration, large tracking capacity, and white-label reports. Add specialist tools where needed. Use Botify or Conductor for large-scale technical SEO, and MarketMuse or Clearscope for content optimization. Use Majestic as a second backlink source.

### Students and beginners

Learners need tools without an enterprise commitment. The Moz entry plan gives affordable access and strong learning content, and MozBar works without a full login. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you own and covers site audits and backlink analysis. Semrush offers a free account for basic keyword and competitor research, with strict usage caps.

## Count the total cost, not the list price

The subscription is only part of the cost. Count four more items.

**Training time.** Moz takes the least time to learn, and Semrush takes the most. The spread comes from feature breadth. Time your own team on a real task.

**Complementary tools.** Ahrefs users often add a separate crawler such as Screaming Frog, a content optimizer such as Clearscope, and a paid search tool. Semrush bundles many of these, so you buy fewer extras.

**Seats.** Each added user adds a monthly seat fee on every platform. For a team of 10, seat fees can exceed the base subscription.

**API access.** Custom integrations and automated reports need API access, which only higher-tier plans include.

Judge the tool by the return it enables, not by its feature count. Three example ratios show the method:

- **Freelancer.** An Ahrefs plan that costs one tenth of a client's monthly fee helps you keep that client. The return is 10 to 1.
- **Agency.** A Semrush plan helps you sell paid search to three SEO-only clients. The new monthly revenue is six times the plan cost, a 6 to 1 return.
- **Enterprise.** A full tool set catches a migration error before launch. The prevented traffic loss is five times the annual tool spend, a 5 to 1 return from one incident.

## Decide with a five-step trial

1. **List your core tasks.** Write down your five most frequent SEO tasks. Judge each tool on those tasks only.
2. **Run real work in the trial.** In September 2026, Moz offered a 30-day free trial and Semrush a 7-day trial. Ahrefs offered no free trial, so test it through the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools or one paid month. Do real client work during the test, and record which tool makes your tasks faster.
3. **Calculate total cost.** Add the subscription, training time at your hourly rate, complementary tools, and seat fees.
4. **Weigh team skill.** If your team already knows one tool well, the switch cost can exceed a rival's small feature lead.
5. **Test for growth.** Ask whether the tool still fits at 2, 5, and 10 times your current scale. A later switch disrupts work, so choose with growth in mind.

## Pair tools, pick a plan tier, and weigh support

You can run more than one tool. Common pairs are Ahrefs for links with Semrush for tracking and audits. Another pair is Screaming Frog for technical work with Ahrefs for content and links. Check that two subscriptions return more than one full platform would.

Start with the entry plan. Upgrade only when you hit a usage limit on tracked keywords, crawled pages, or reports. Most solo practitioners and small teams work well on entry or mid plans.

In this review, Moz had the strongest reputation for responsive support and learning content. Ahrefs had excellent documentation and video tutorials. Semrush support worked but was sometimes slower, which fits its product complexity.

A tool your peers share helps collaboration and peer learning. Do not trade workflow fit for conformity. Choose the tool that serves your tasks. [SEO tools by role](/articles/seo-tools-by-role) maps the wider stack for each job.
