# Domain transfer lock: plan your agent website handoff

**A domain transfer lock can prevent moving your registration to another registrar. A website rebuild can sometimes proceed while that lock remains.** ICANN describes changing hosting or website destinations without transferring registration. Ask your registrar which changes your current restrictions permit. [ICANN transfer FAQ](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en).

Before changing website companies, identify the blocked action. Then plan around your seller form, buyer inquiry destination, business email, and domain renewal. Require a working inquiry receipt before accepting the replacement website.

Official sources below were checked on 2026.10.14. The checklists are proposed handoff requirements. Apply them to the accounts and services your business uses.

## Decide which handoff you need

A registrar transfer changes the company managing your domain registration. A change of registrant changes the registered holder's details. ICANN treats these as separate procedures. Moving website hosting can be another choice. [ICANN transfer FAQ](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en).

Ask the incoming builder to name each requested change:

| Requested work | Question to settle before approval |
| --- | --- |
| Replace the website | Can the domain stay with its current registrar while the website destination changes? |
| Move registration | Which registrar will receive it, and is the domain eligible now? |
| Correct the registered holder | Who must authorize the change, and will it trigger a waiting period? |
| Change DNS hosting | Who will retain the current records and verify website and email operation? |

Keep the decision in your written website scope. Ask why registration must move if the intended result is a repaired seller inquiry path.

## Read the domain status before unlocking anything

Use [ICANN Lookup](https://lookup.icann.org/) to identify the registrar. ICANN's FAQ explains this lookup. Then request the account's transfer eligibility details from that registrar. [ICANN transfer FAQ](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en).

Domain status codes describe different restrictions. Save every displayed code, rather than treating any word containing “lock” as the diagnosis. [ICANN status-code guide](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/epp-status-codes-2014-06-16-en).

| Status | Meaning | Next action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `clientTransferProhibited` | Registrar-set transfer restriction. | Ask about removal and separate eligibility limits. |
| `serverTransferProhibited` | Registry-set transfer restriction. | Ask the registrar to coordinate with the registry. |
| `clientUpdateProhibited` or `serverUpdateProhibited` | Updates are restricted. | Confirm which changes require release. |
| `clientHold` or `serverHold` | The domain is not active in DNS. | Ask for the cause and restoration procedure. |
| `pendingTransfer` | A transfer request is processing. | Confirm that you authorized it. |
| `redemptionPeriod` | Registration is in a deletion-recovery stage. | Contact the current registrar about restoration. |

These meanings come from [ICANN's EPP guide](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/epp-status-codes-2014-06-16-en). A transfer restriction and a hold require different responses.

For an ordinary removable lock, ICANN directs you to the registrar. Its locked-domain guidance provides an escalation route if access to unlocking remains unavailable after five days. [ICANN locked-domain guidance](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/locked-2013-05-03-en).

## Check the waiting period before changing holder details

For domains governed by ICANN's Transfer Policy, which covers generic top-level domains and not every country-code domain, the policy permits denial within sixty days of initial registration or a previous registrar transfer. A change of registrant carries a sixty-day transfer lock unless the registrar permits an advance opt-out. [Current ICANN Transfer Policy, sections I.A.3 and II.C](https://www.icann.org/en/contracted-parties/accredited-registrars/resources/domain-name-transfers/policy).

Material changes to the registrant name, organization, or email fall within the change-of-registrant procedure. An opt-out must precede the change; registrars may choose whether to offer it. [Current ICANN Transfer Policy, sections II.A and II.C](https://www.icann.org/en/contracted-parties/accredited-registrars/resources/domain-name-transfers/policy).

Before replacing an old holder email, request the correct sequence in writing. Record the restriction's reason and release date. Ask whether the domain's extension has additional requirements. Keep unresolved eligibility separate from the website launch date.

If a former builder controls the account, resolve authorization with the registrar first. The current policy assigns transfer authority to the registered name holder. [Current ICANN Transfer Policy, section I.A.1.1](https://www.icann.org/en/contracted-parties/accredited-registrars/resources/domain-name-transfers/policy).

## Protect email and inquiry delivery during the change

Inventory the current nameservers, DNS provider, website destination, and mail service before approving a switch. Request a complete DNS export from the person managing the domain. Have the incoming builder review it before changing records.

DNS records serve different functions. A and AAAA records map names to IP addresses. CNAME records point to another domain name. MX records direct mail delivery. TXT records can hold verification and email-authentication information. [Cloudflare's DNS record reference](https://developers.cloudflare.com/dns/manage-dns-records/reference/dns-record-types/).

Ask whether DNS hosting continues after registration moves or the old website service ends. Require a separate plan for any DNS-provider change. Include DNSSEC configuration in that review when it is enabled. Leave the technical change to the person responsible for DNS.

Use a dated acceptance record for each seller and buyer form. With permitted test details, submit from a phone and desktop. Confirm arrival at the agreed inbox or contact system. Check the reply destination, then test incoming and outgoing business email.

Record which service failed if a test stops. Check the form, receiving system, mailbox, and DNS separately. Keep the old service available until the agreed replacement checks pass. These are acceptance instructions, not a guarantee against interruption.

## Complete registration transfer as its own task

When a registrar move is authorized and eligible, follow the current registrar's unlock procedure. For example, GoDaddy publishes a domain-lock control. That control is one registrar's process, rather than a universal interface. [GoDaddy lock instructions, checked 2026.10.14](https://www.godaddy.com/help/unlock-or-lock-my-domain-410).

Obtain the authorization code from the current registrar. ICANN describes it as identifying the holder for transfer. When no self-service option exists, the registrar must provide it within five calendar days of the request. Initiate the move through the receiving registrar. [ICANN transfer FAQ](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en).

Keep the code out of an ordinary website brief. Use the receiving registrar's transfer process. Track completion separately from website acceptance. If transfer is denied, request the reason and required remedy. ICANN provides a complaint route for an improperly denied transfer. [ICANN transfer FAQ](https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en).

At completion, check account access, renewal responsibility, DNS operation, and inquiry receipts. Confirm that transfer protection is restored. Have the outgoing builder's access removed only after the agreed handoff checks pass.

## Specify the website result alongside the domain work

Your handoff sequence distinguishes registrar restrictions from changes to the website. Use [whole website fix: registrar transfer locks](/for/real-estate) to describe the transfer dependency. With the whole website fix, your business owns its registrar account.
